History:

The story of the world leader in building materials began in 1833 in the Ardèche region, at a place called “Lafarge”, which means “the forge”, near the village of Teil. In 1864 Lafarge won the first major project: the Suez canal in Egypt. 200,000 tons of hydraulic lime, delivered in wooden barrels, were needed to build the piers of the Suez canal. Although its production capacity was limited to just 20 kilns, which produced 50,000 tons per year, Lafarge rose to the challenge. The canal will be inaugurated on November 17th, 1869, and connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea.

Lafarge opened a research laboratory near Teil, France in 1887. This laboratory was the first in the world to specialize in cement.

In 2000 Lafarge and the WWF, the world’s largest environmental protection organization, signed a 5-year agreement as part of the “Conservation Partner” program. A world first and the Group made its first appearance on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, a global index that ranks the companies that are most advanced in terms of sustainable development.
